Cheltenham-based potter, Ann Sohn-Rethel makes work from her garden workshop. She studied ceramics in the 1980s at the Sir John Cass School of Art in Whitechapel, which was then part of the Central London Polytechnic.
Using red earthenware clay, she creates beautiful pots for everyday use. They are decorated with natural mineral colours – cobalt, iron and copper – on a base of white slip, which enables the warm colour of the red clay to show through, retaining a sense of the original material the pots are made from. All her pots are high-fired (1125 degrees centigrade), which makes them dishwasher and microwave safe, and the garden pots, frost-proof.
