Having spent much of his life nurturing the talent of others, recently retired Head of Art at Pate’s Grammar school, Rod Ashman, is now enjoying the space to more fully explore his own. Trained as a painter and ceramicist in Wolverhampton, Cheltenham and Birmingham, it is painting that has become his passion in recent years.
Inspired by regular visits to Cornwall, and captivated by the countryside of Gloucestershire, seascapes and landscapes are his current point of focus. In attempting to express a feeling of place, Rod’s interpretive approach often appears abstract, capturing the essence of a scene through a collection of reactionary, in the moment marks. From a distance one can make out the representational form; up close are the many textured layers of what Rod describes as “[the] abstract, indulgent use of paint”.
