John Pickering spent a large part of his working life in graphic design, and for twenty years was design director and partner of a leading design consultancy. He left in 1998 to pursue a private passion for fine art photography and painting.
He has travelled extensively photographing landscapes and architecture. This plays an integral role in his paintings where we find colours and textures of these places; a hint of sand, waves, lichen, faded paint on a weathered building.
The subject of the work may be a hostile landscape, yet an overall sense of balance results from the graphic composition structuring these elements.
Ultimately, he distils a wild atmosphere into serene compositions which epitomise the peace and solitude he takes from the untamed environment.
