Working out of his studio, near Stow-on-the-Wold, Robin makes sculptural and functional wheel-thrown ceramics in porcelain and dark clay. Born in Hong Kong and having spent much time in Asia and Japan, he is particularly influenced by Song dynasty Chinese and contemporary Japanese ceramics, including Koie Ryoji and Hamanama Gesson.
The ‘iron rust’ series on show developed, as often happens, by chance, when the iron oxide bled through the white milky celadon glaze, during firing. Robin has enhanced and highlighted this happy accident by making uneven rims of a different clay. This adds complexity to the white glaze, allowing the iron-rust to pool and spread unevenly over the pot. The pots are then glaze-fired in a gas kiln in oxidation to 1240°C.
