Richard studied natural sciences at Cambridge and later engineering at Leeds.

His interest in pottery came at an early age, it came from his mother the well know Lancashire potter Joan Bideau.

The crystalline glaze is one of the most challenging effects that the studio potter can strive to perfect.  The spectacular appearance is due to crystals that form within the glaze during firing.  To ensure that the crystals form properly, a particular type of porcelain clay is essential.  Richard has recently started to produce his own porcelain clays.
