THREADS

“Textiles are not just materials; they are stories weaved with threads." Anon.

This work represents a novel perspective, a revival and reinterpretation of discarded garments. Through my work, I explore the concept of peeling away conventional surfaces to delve into the nuanced, multidimensional facets that shape our relationship with clothing. The narrative revolves around the themes of nonconformity, discovering a unique voice and visual identity that allows us to be seen and heard. It delves into questions concerning stereotypes, gender, and belonging to a tribe.
These artworks draw inspiration from a diverse range of influences, including the tribal motifs found in African mud cloths and the exceptional artistic legacy of Rosie Lee Tompkins, a celebrated African-American quilt maker and fibre artist.
African Bogolanfini cloths, renowned for their intricate patterns, held deep tribal secrets and were believed to possess protective and therapeutic qualities.
Rosie Lee Tompkins, known for her abstract and improvisational compositions, frequently infused her works with personal significance. For instance, "Three Sixes," one of her most renowned pieces, pays tribute to three relatives whose birthdays feature the number 6.
